I will never forget my elementary school librarian.

Her name was Mrs. Bailey. She had tight brown curls, wore bright red lipstick and painted her fingernails to match, and she had a spectacular voice. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her whenever she read aloud to us; she was my wardrobe to Narnia in human form, transporting me to the land of words and adventure. When I was in third grade and wrote my first ever book — a melodramatic gripping adventure about a wild horse named Cinnamon — she read it and praised me with the kind of enthusiasm that ensured I would remember her forever.

an excerpt from THE JOURNEY: omg y’all they are totally in love. epic mustang love.

I will never forget my first grade teacher.

Her name was Mrs. Young. She had short blond hair and a voice like Kate Mulgrew. Once, when I smarted off in her class (safely behind her back, I thought), she caught me doing it and made me “sign the book.” SIGN THE BOOK. I don’t even remember what signing the ominous notebook kept at the back of the classroom did to one’s academic record, but I remember my mortification, my crushing goody two-shoes guilt. (“What was I thinking? Mocking the teacher?! I am going straight to Hell.”) Mrs. Young liked me, but she did not put up with my precocious crap, and I loved her for it. When I wrote the abovementioned opus about wild horse Cinnamon — and her doomed lover, Desert Dust, and the tragically orphaned filly, Mischief, who liked to wear flowers in her hair for some reason? — I showed it to Mrs. Young. She read it and loved it and requested a copy.

I will never forget her, or Mrs. Bailey.

For countless students across the country, it’s the same: The teachers and librarians they see every day affect them in immeasurable, invaluable ways. They shape their futures and encourage their dreams.

Today, I want to give back just a little to these remarkable people by giving away ten hardcover copies of my first book, The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, to teachers and librarians!

I know that budgets can be strict, and you may not always be able to purchase the books you want to add to your classroom or school libraries. Hopefully this will help get Cavendish into the hands of kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to read it, and add another book to collections that may need a bit of a boost.

The first ten librarians, school media specialists, or teachers who respond to this post will receive Cavendish, as well as a set of signed Cavendish bookmarks and a copy of the Cavendish reading guide (which is still in the works but will be mailed to you upon completion). Additionally, I will gladly personalize your copy of Cavendish, making it out to your classroom or school library!

Each of the first ten respondents will also receive a set of signed bookmarks for my second book, The Year of Shadows, and a few The Year of Shadows stickers (great for summer reading prize packs, random rewards, etc.)!

And one grand prize winner, randomly selected out of the first ten to respond, will receive one of my very few, very precious The Year of Shadows ARCs!

To win the above goodies — and for a chance to win an ARC of The Year of Shadows! — all you have to do is fill out this form (now closed). Again, the first ten respondents (U.S./Canada only, please) will get Cavendish and the swag listed above, and then I will randomly select one of you to receive the ARC as well.

That’s it!

Once again — because it can’t be said enough — librarians and educators: You ROCK. Thank you for all you do, and thank you for stopping by!

The Cabinet of Curiosities: Red Shoes and Doll Parts

20 Feb

Just a quick note to let you know that there is a new story up at the middle grade short story blog I run with fellow MG writers Stefan Bachmann (The Peculiar), Katherine Catmull (Summer and Bird), and Emma Trevayne (the upcoming Coda).

What’s that, you say? A middle grade short story blog?

Why, YES. It is called The Cabinet of Curiosities.

I have been woefully quiet about the Cabinet here at my main blog, but that is only because I am SO BUSY right now, not because I am not over-the-moon happy with the Cabinet of Curiosities project and how FUN it is has been to work with these three amazing authors.

Basically, the Cabinet is a site for middle grade short stories — specifically, dark and creepy and whimsical middle grade fiction (along the likes of, say, Cavendish and The Year of Shadows!). Once a week, one of us Curators posts a new story fitting that month’s theme. For example, our theme for January was cake (to celebrate the Cabinet’s inaugural month), and our theme for February is love (for obvious reasons; but don’t think that our stories are all chocolate and roses and sugary-sweet romance! don’t you do it!).

Why did we open this site? To experiment with short fiction, to dabble in the dark middle grade world we all love so much, and because there is so not enough of said dark middle grade out there. We want MOAR horror, MOAR creepiness, MOAR macabre whimsy!

Tim Burton, eat your heart out.

As I said, today’s story is by yours truly — a tale about love between a girl named Jackie and a . . . well, I won’t give it away, but his name is Mr. Jimmy. And he doesn’t smell very nice.

The story’s title is “Red Shoes and Doll Parts.” Head on over and check it outif you dare.

(Also, you can follow the Cabinet’s Curators on Twitter!)

FINAL COVER REVEAL — and first page! — of THE YEAR OF SHADOWS!!!

31 Jan

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

It’s the LAST DAY of The Year of Shadows Cover Reveal Week, which means . . .

. . . TODAY I REVEAL THE FINAL COVER!

AKA

(at this point in reveal week, UNICORN and I are so excited that we have merged into one verklempt, flailing, sparkly being [above], which is kind of terrifying but also awesome)

Day 1 of reveal week was at IceyBooks, where I unveiled the illustrator for The Year of Shadows, Karl Kwasny, and shared with you his original sketch of the main character, Olivia.

Day 2 of reveal week was at The Book Smugglers, which included interviews with Karl and with Simon & Schuster art director Lucy Ruth Cummins — as well as exclusive sneak peeks of the interior illustrations!

And today, Day 3, is over at Mundie Moms/Mundie Kids, where you will see the flap copy for The Year of Shadows, the FIRST PAGE (eeeeeeeek!), AND the FINAL COVER!

Y’ALL I AM SO EXCITED. Like . . . I LOVED the cover for Cavendish (created by illustrator Sarah Watts and the aforementioned Lucy Ruth Cummins). LOVED it. It was absolutely PERFECT for Cavendish. Similarly, this second cover is ABSOLUTELY 110% FLAILISHLY PERFECT for The Year of Shadows. When I first saw it, I started crying, and I’m not really one of those authors who cries at every stage of the journey. Like when I first saw Cavendish in stores, for example, I pretty much just felt numb and surreal and walked around for the rest of the night with dazed, glassy eyes. But I didn’t cry. If you saw me, you wouldn’t have guessed I had just seen my first book in stores; you might just have thought I was in the beginning stages of zombie-fication.

But this? This stunning cover? I cried.

Okay, I’ll stop rambling now. Just go see. Go! Go!

(And don’t forget to comment on the cover reveal posts at Mundie Moms/Mundie Kids for a chance to win one of the seven cover reveal week prizes! You can also go back and comment on Day 1′s and Day 2′s posts, if you haven’t already, for more chances to win!)

((AND. Have you added The Year of Shadows on Goodreads yet? You can do that HERE.))
