I really, really wanted to like this movie. I went last Friday on my day off, sat down to be sped off at warp speed and I could not believe how horrible the plot was. What really bothered me the most were the huge plot holes:

--How the hell did Scotty just fly up to that space station and "sneak" in? Then he magically gets onto the big bad ship. Sure, he's Scotty, but the writers could have at least had him push a button to fake his shuttle's ID or something. I guess in the future no one has security cameras...

--The re-writing of Stark Trek: The Wrath of Kahn fell flat. I talked about this to my friends and they laughed at me, but I thought that Kirk and Spock should have kissed. There was so much overly blown emotional angst between the two of them that I thought it would have been a much better story if Spock were gay. Add something new to the story rather than just take the same storyline and flip characters. Anyone could do that. There were no stakes in this movie and you knew that no one was really going to die. (I rather liked a Wired article I read earlier this week about how they should have killed Kirk--at least to the next movie).

--Speaking of which: The Jesus Tribble was the lamest thing ever. I understand that this is sci-fi and that there is suspension of disbelief, but there were just one too many convenient things in the movie.

--I did like Cumberbatch as Kahn. I totally understand where you're coming from but I basically threw all that I hoped for in Trek out the window after the last Trek film (which I know many call 90210 in Space). However, if you've not seen Cumberbatch in the BBC Sherlock, then I would highly recommend you check that series out. He's really solid.

All in all I fear for the next Star Wars movie knowing that Abrams is going to direct. It's pretty obvious that story doesn't really matter and that sloppy writing and the gratuitous lingerie scene are perfect examples. It's a shame that such a strong brand has produced such poor stories. But I think what's worse is that audience just eat it up. I'd love to see a director take a chance and really try something different. All these remakes are really not working well. They're okay but if I want to see Kahn, I'm simply going to put in the 2nd movies from the '80s. This new one just was plain flat and held no surprises for me.

It's so true, everything you said. So often i catch myself comparing everything I do to what other people are doing, whether it be my body, my hair (for I too have the Hermione Granger hair), or my writing. And then I'll remind myself that I shouldn't do that, and that we all do things our own way, and that's what makes us special and unique. It's so easy to lose confidence, but it helps to know there are others who feel the same way. Thanks for this post. It was really uplifting.

Oh my god, can we hang out, please?

I'm seeing the movie tomorrow but have read all the spoilers because that's how I roll. And I've been rewatching some TOS in preparation and had just realized something about Nimoy!Spock vs Quinto!Spock. Even though I find Quinto very, very attractive, his register is much flatter than Nimoy's--he always seems to be communicating one emotion, which is barely-repressed anger. Whereas Nimoy was able to communicate a wider range of emotions, even as Spock, a character who denies them. Watching "Journey to Babel" now, I'm struck by how gentle, empathetic, and kind he seems. You never really get that with Quinto. It's a much more macho portrayal and yes blah blah blah dead mother more human but I still really miss that fundamental kindness.
