The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand
Victoria hates nonsense. There is no need for it when your life is perfect.
The only smudge on her pristine life is her best friend Lawrence. He is a disaster—lazy and dreamy, shirt always untucked, obsessed with his silly piano. Victoria often wonders why she ever bothered being his friend. (Lawrence does, too.)
But then Lawrence goes missing. And he’s not the only one. Victoria soon discovers that Mrs. Cavendish’s children’s home is not what it appears to be. Kids go in but come out . . . different, or they don’t come out at all.
If anyone can sort this out, it’s Victoria, even if it means getting a little messy.
You can also check out Cavendish at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indiebound, and Goodreads!
Now, hold all that information tight in that awesome brain of yours. You’ll need to remember it for the upcoming quiz!
But wait, there’s more! ANOTHER giveaway!
Updated (5/8): And the winner is . . .
Linda (Book Ninja)!
Congratulations, Linda! I will contact you via email shortly.
Thanks to everyone who participated — in both the YAmazing Race with MGnificent Prizes and my own giveaway! Also, after reading through all your comments about what creeps you out, I’m seriously sleeping with the light on tonight!
~*~
See, there are a lot of bugs in Cavendish. And they’re not very nice. In fact, they’re downright gross and creepy. (I have this phobia about bugs, especially beetle-type bugs, so what better way to overcome that than to be alone in the middle of the night, in the dark, writing about swarms of them?? Oh, the logic of writers.)
ANYWAY. I have a couple of bugs here that are the exact opposite of gross and creepy. In fact, they are quite adorable and I love them so much that I kind of want to keep them for myself but I won’t. Nay, they are for you! WHAT? It’s my birthday and I’m giving presents to other people?? I KNOW, IT’S CRAZY AROUND HERE.
The first one is named Vincent. Here he is:
And here’s his buddy Jared:
And here they are together (they be rollin’):
(I found these bugs, by the way, at this Etsy shop, Gloombug.)
For a chance to win one of these two bugs, simply comment below and tell me what creeps YOU out — that’s it! This giveaway — like the YAmazing Race — ends Tuesday May 8 at noon EST. I’ll announce the two winners that afternoon!
Thanks for stopping by! Ready to move on to the next stop in the YAmazing Race? Click HERE.

Statues of people–particularly big angel statues in graveyards. I can’t stand those blank eyes, and I have this totally creeptastic fear that something is going to be looking back at me. Gives me goosebumples just to think about it!
Things that come out of the water. Or, well, the potential of things unnatural coming out of the water. When I was little, I’d always ran like the wind whenever I had to flush the tonight at night. You know, in case a hand reached our something. Once, while I was showering, the tile walls gave out behind me (they’d rotted from the inside out) and I screamed holy terror.
I’ve never been very scared of bugs though. My brother and mom are terrified of them, so I’d be elected to catch and release them. (Ticks on one’s head, on the other hand, SCARY.)
Thanks a lot. I’ll never be able to look at my bathroom the same…
Spiders and centipedes. *shudders*
Spiders and insects. Ewwww ewwww ewwww.
Spiders!! OMG even the little tiney ones. I just can’t handle spiders. Or maggots. ugh *gag*
and by tiney I totally meant “tiny” lol!
Those are adorable. Bugs creep me out too, especially ants. We’ve had a couple swarms, including one in my bathroom. Ants should not be in the bathroom. I’m at my most vulnerable there.
Mine is a weird one…I’m creeped out by fireworks that move and talk. It’s weird because I don’t think they exist in real life, but I have had nightmares about them and any time I think about them it makes me nervous. The closest I ever came to seeing something like this was in the 4th Harry Potter movie during the Quidditch tournament (remember the leprechaun firework that danced after it exploded?) I had to look away until it was over!
Oh man, those are the cutest bugs ever.
I’m scared of centipedes. All the legs creep me out!
Frogs! I am totally afraid of them!
Snakes and heights really creep me out. Shudder.
What creeps me out? My ex. No, lol. But yeah… yeah. (Was I drunk that entire relationship?) Anyway, I’m also very anti-snake and prefer not to get to close to spiders. HOWEVER, I am a huge fan of graveyards and spooky novels!
Ugh. I’m totally creeped out by that little white thing in eggs. But i love eating eggs. If i think about it too much while eating breakfast I scare myself.
Spiders. Boring, but true!
I am freaked out by centipedes, they are super creepy crawly. Also things that jump, crickets, spiders. but nothing is as bad as all those legs on centipedes.
the sound a Popsicle makes when someone bite into it… weird? i know lol but it gives me goosebumps
Ugh my BIGGEST creep factor is cockroaches. Especially when they fly. Seriously why do they need to fly? And to be so big and make godawful crunch noises when you go to smush them? They are the ONLY thing that will have me run from a room…well that and Balloons. But that is a whole nother issue.
Bugs and snakes don’t bother me. People who eat their boogers creep me out. Actually, anyone who is on the show “My Strange Addiction” creep me out.
what creeps me out? most definitely clowns *shivers* and those people who are living statues that just stand there looking and not moving. so very creepy.
Omg! Those bugs are adorable!
Need to win this giveaway. <3 Thank you for the chance
*Fingers crossed.* <3 Hmm. Spiders creep me out.. and all kinds of bugs :p Except those pretty ones you posted
Love, Carina
Thanks for the giveaway !
What really creeps me out is when someone cracks their knuckles or other body parts like their arms. I think it is so horrible ugh !
Oh man I have so many things that creepy me out. Clowns, because you never know what’s really hiding behind all that makeup and attention seeking attire…plus they only show one emoition most of the time…not trustworthy at all. Then there are Earwigs, I’ve woken up twice to find an earwig heading for…you guessed it, my ear. I know people says that’s a myth but someone ovbiously didn’t tell those two. And then Centipedes, which I’ve always feared. But I have been bitten by one three times while I was asleep and ended up being sick because of it. I also have a damaged nerve because of it and my thumb was numb for a day and half. Lol…scary stuff.
I cannot stand insects, spiders creepy crawlies with lots of legs and fast gross gross gross
bats. bats creep me out. and make me want to cry.
Well, for one, that dude in the 1st picture kinda creeps me out! LOL
JK
Actually, I HATE bugs too! Especially spiders! I cant even kill one ’cause I get so freaked out…ridiculous, I know lol
Thanks for the Giveaway!
Those bugs from Gloombug are so cute!
Clowns creep me out.

Flying Cockroaches, Clowns, Zombies, and Leatherface all creep me out. lol
Thanks for the giveaway

Those bugs are kind of hugely adorable, aha.
What creeps me out? Slimy things like slugs. I just. Ewww. D:
Snakes. Snakes snakes snakes. Oh my gosh snakes creep me out
But these bugs are darling and I want one! Also I want to read your book!
I am deathly afraid of bugs. Like, I’ll hurt myself trying to get away. Thanks for this giveaway ♥
Bare feet on the dashboard of the car, I mean seriously at least put on some flip flops!
Spiders creep me out!
Crabs skittering across the sand. *shudders* Though I don’t mind eating them!
Roaches and silverfish. EW.
Clowns! No question, hands down they are the creepiest things EVER!
Thanks for the giveaway! These bugs are sooooo cute!

Okay, I need a promise that I will not be judged on this……………….. Close enough.
So, I am terrified of caterpillars. Yeah, everything else is fair game. I’m actually fascinated by spiders, but caterpillars are unthinkable. And here’s the story, so I’m not a COMPLETE creep. A few years back I went camping with the fam’. Had a nice cabin, beside a beautiful lake, and amazing greenery. As we all sat down to start the fire, the sun setting and wind blowing, a giant caterpillar–larger than I’d ever seen one–fell on my arm. I couldn’t shake it off or hit it off, we had to literally pick it off my arm. And if that’s that bad enough, the next day, as I sat at the picnic table to eat a would-have-been-delicious sandwich, another caterpillar–much smaller, thankfully–dropped from the tree and right onto my sandwich. And this one was dead.
So there. I am utterly horrified of caterpillars. Proceed to die of laughter.
I hate crickets. Hate them, hate them, hate them. Crickets. Ugh. Small ones. Big ones. Especially the big ones. Hate crickets.
Thank you. I feel better.
Spiders make me cry. One almost jumped into my eye this morning.
Spiders creep me out somewhat, but it’s broken glass that really gets to me. I usually have bare feet and when I break a glass I go nuts calling till someone comes and rescues me.
SPIDERS!!! Can’t stand them.
But I do love those cute Etsy bugs!
Nothing bugs me more than bugs. It’s pretty funny after you get over the fact that they sometimes are plain creepy. They are always blocking your direct path, and usually I have to call in my dad (who gets upset every time I call him because he knows it has to do with bugs). I’ll even freak out when I am with my boyfriend.
I just get jittery when I see one, because afterwords I feel as if something is crawling all over me, and sometimes it’s just my boyfriend just messing around with me. Maybe I should be fearful of men instead. haha.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Love,
Paige Schwartz

spiders and lizards creep me out
I love the “They be rollin” picture…it made me laugh. Ticks creep me out! In the last week I have had to take ticks out of my mom, my daughter and my neighbor-YUCK!
desiree1612@hotmail.com
If I told you everything that gave me the creeps, I might be here awhile….
But snakes, bugs (like ANY creepy-crawly), spiders (is this classed as creepy-crawly?)
Thanks for the giveaway
Most bugs give me the creeps! But the thought of bed bugs – so little that you can’t even see them at first – crawling all over the place {shivers!}
All flying and non-flying bugs to be honest.
Clowns… I HATE clowns… Whenever I see them by the street I can help myself, I just turn around or enter a shop, whatever it takes to get away from them.
Sometimes, I don’t know how is not so bad but other times I just can’t… Sigh.
Anyway, I LOVE your bugs, they are lovely! (being bugs and all, you know xD). Thanks
alaiel.kreuz AT gmail.com
Okay, first off, THOSE ARE RIDICULOUSLY ADORABLE.
Second off . . . the dark. Yeah, I’m fourteen, and that still hasn’t gotten old. Also, death, and similarly morbid things.
THe dark! I hate being in the silent dark. It is slightly bearable if their is music, but I still curl into a ball and try to not think of frightening things.
Centipedes terrify me—and mice, unless they are in cages as pets (somebody else’s). And anything I see out of the corner of my eye—usually it’s just my hair, but it still creeps me out.
Thanks for the great giveaway!
Not a lot of things i am scared of. But one thing i am scared of – LIZARDS. Man now those things are scary. I mean how many animals can grow back their tails huh?
These bugs are so beautiful but I am afraid them so bad. I also hate the snails. Thank you for the giveaway!
Aww, I don’t normally like bugs but these two are actually cute!! What a great idea
Well… darkness and spiders definitely creep me out. And some bugs too!
Spiders freak me out more than anything! I don’t exactly know why they just do… They are just strange little creatures…
The ocean freaks me out. Nice giveaway.
heyprettiel at hotmail dot com
I think this is a little cliché, but public bathrooms freak me out. They’re nasty and disgusting and STINK. Ew. Ugh. lol
Thanks!

Snakes and roaches. Scary and skittery! And believe it or not, my maiden name is Vincent and my nephew’s name is Jared, I have to win one of these!

Those bugs are so cute! And I have to agree, bugs creep me the heck out. ESPECIALLY anything resembling a beetle or a spider.
There are two things that creep me out. The first is the dark. What’s lurking in it that I can’t see?! The second thing that creeps me out is deep, dark bodies of water. I can handle swimming pools, but ponds, lakes, oceans? No way!
jacqueline.c.goodman@gmail.com
omg they are so cute! especially vincent!
I hate spiders! I would rather be on fire than covered in spiders, for real. *shudder*
and happy birthday by the way!
catiesmoviesinmyhead@gmail.com
Haunted houses freak me out. One Halloween when I was little, I went to one and had a bad experience there. Haven’t been brave to go into one since then.
Cockroaches. I’m talking about the huge ones that make a terrible *crush* sound when you step on them. I see one and I scream and back away and I cannot kill it. I literally have to call someone to kill it because I simply cannot bear the crush sound…uggh
Thanks so much for the giveaway! They are ADORABLE!!
What creeps me out is actually ants, lots lots of red ants. I mean they bite and tickled me by picturing them everywhere on your body. Ugh.
blacathy@yahoo.com
Um hair in my food. Even typing it makes me gag a little. A good diet? imagining my food covered in hair. I’d never eat.
The dark and my imagination just don’t mesh and I always manage to freak myself out. Uncool.
Those bugs are so CUTE! I LOVE them! Vincent is my favorite, but Jared is definitely cute, too!

Lots of things creep me out like bugs(of course), the abandoned house at the end of my street, and mac and cheese. I just don’t like it. Thanks for the giveaway!

Everyone thinks I’m crazy but… butterflies! Gross. I shiver just thinking about them.
pocketofbooks@gmail.com
Snakes. *shudders* Just thinking about and then writing it down gave me chills up my arm!
pherlaithiel (at) gmail (dot) com
Children! *whispers* They terrify me! Or rather, their screaming does.
Aww, those bugs are adorable! Must. Hug. Them.
lindadao2060 at yahoo dot com
I have a huuuugggeee problem with the spiders.I hate their long ,thin legs. And their the furry bodies.OMG,I gotta stop thinking on them.
matarela2007@yahoo.com
Oh god, cockroaches. They scare the shit out of me.
The Slender Man. I stumbled across it whilst browsing some creepypasta and now I sleep with a nightlight. No joke-it’s a blue canary nightlight from the song “Birdhouse in Your Soul.”
I’ve creeped myself out again just thinking about it-time to go hide under my covers.
kitkat777(at)mail(dot)com
STINKBUGS. Oh. My goodness. They are gross AND creepy.
HA! ANTS creep me out! There’s never JUST one!
amberr610[at]gmail[dot]com
Apes creep me out…they are my biggest fear, and I can’t even explain it! They terrify me. Movies like Planet of the Apes make it even worse…much to my brothers delight, who likes to sneak in to my room and change my computers wallpaper to pics of apes. Not nice.
Thanks for taking part in the race and for the giveaway!
Baggins
bookishbaggins(at)gmail(dot)com
Spiders (or any bug with more than 6 legs), roaches, heights, drowning, falling, things that buzz, things that slither (ugh)…Centipedes and millipedes!! Aliens. Dark woods at night, sharks, earthquakes… Scary movies… Shall I go on? Haha!

OOPS! That’s howdymomma at YAHOO dot com!!
Oy me…
Hey there! This book sounds amazing <3 added it to my Goodreads (Shinyfox)!
I have a couple of things that give me the creeps.
The first are needles. I hate them, so much. I can't get shots, donate blood or anything without having a panic attack. I can't explain why, it's not a phobia though, because I can use needles on animals (I'm a Vet Tech) and have no problems picking up a needle to give a shot or give fluids to an animal. But if someone tries sticking me I go ballistic on them. Go figure!
The second are angel statues, mostly due to watching Doctor Who! They have episodes with these Weeping Angel statues that freeze when you look at them, but if you blink or look away they move towards you really fast! If they touch you then you get sent back in time and have to live out the rest of your life in that time period and the Angels take the remaining years of your life for energy! So now I get creeped out by angel statues! Especially when my neighbors decide to move theirs around every week…
ratiefanatic(at)yahoo(dot)com
In general, I don’t like being surprised by bugs, insects etc. – but I especially despise the giant, 2-3 inch long, flying palmetto bugs (aka flying roaches) that live in the South. arrrrrgh! creeps me out just thinking about them!
on the other end of the spectrum, Vincent and Jared are quite adorable and don’t creep me out at all!!
~Lynne
zypadeedodah (at) aol (dot) com
I’m in love with Vincent & Jared, they are so stinking adorable!
What creeps me out is any living species that does not speak. If they can’t speak, then I don’t know what they are thinking and I get seriously scared. I’d rather have someone screaming at me and be able to tell what they’re angry about and what their intentions are, than have a cat sitting and staring at me and not know if they are planning on attacking me.
I hope you had a happy birthday!

Snakes creep me out.
bn100candg(at)hotmail(dot)com
Bridges that go over water and snakes.
I think the big blue eyes are scary-looking… on that one bug.
Spiders!
What creeps me out most is having mirrors in my room at night. Maybe it’s a Bloody Mary phobia, but I actually take down my full length mirror every night before going to bed and turn it around so the reflective side faces the wall. Take that, BM!
First… that gif!!! LOL
Honestly…? Anything with more than two legs freaks me out… especially when they can fly but they don’t look like they can so I get the initial ahh-you-have-so-many-legs!! then the omigod-you-can-fly-why-can-you-fly!?!
Spiders and worms? The scariest things out there for me.
Spiders & Snakes. My mom got me scared of these things, & now I won’t even go out in the woods at all.
Aww those bugs are cute! Much better than the ones that cause me fear :earwigs. It’s something about the way they movie that creeps me out. Plus the old tale about finding them in ears (which I know they don’t really do, but is still enough to creep me out!).
Love the cover of this book and it sounds great. Thank you!
serpintinesbandaid@gmail.com
Bugs … but only bugs only bodies. Like fleas and ticks and stuff. Ew!
Scorpions make me scream and jump like a little girl!

I hate cockroaches with a passion! Especially when they fly! Eeeek.
