I forgot until just now that I’m supposed to update my blog with my ROW80 progress every Wednesday and Sunday. OOPS.
Anyway, I’m loving ROW80 so far! It’s only been two days, but I’m already enjoying the positive effects of working in a community of other like-minded writers, as well as knowing that I must — simply MUST — get in my 750 words a day, no excuses, no exceptions.
Currently, I’m working on my fifth Cracked fairy tale, titled The Mason, the Fiddler, the Rider, and the
Pirate. So far this week, I’ve written 3437 words, which comes out to about 1145 words a day. As awesome as this is for a start, I don’t want to adjust my goal up from 750 words a day, at least not yet. There’s craziness afoot everywhere, what with job applications, trying to catch up on reading, and the whole Mom situation, so I don’t want to get too excited and overestimate what I’ll be able to do over these next few weeks while Mom is in and out of surgery.
Also, in even awesomer news, I started talking to myself in the car on the way home today (yeah, don’t even, you do it, too), and I totally came up with the opening of Cracked, Chapter 1. There will be a prologue, but that’s been clear in my head for a while. I was really worried about Chapter 1, and now I have not only a first sentence, but the first few paragraphs. Even if I end up changing them somewhere down the road, I’m so excited because now I don’t have the whole “How the heck am I starting this book?” thing to frighten me.
What about you? How are you enjoying ROW80 so far? Are you loving it as much as I am?
Also, have you seen the cover for Michelle Hodkin’s upcoming YA novel, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer? Good gracious, it’s GORGEOUS. If you don’t follow her Twitter feed or her blog, you really should. I mean, really. Look at that cover. <3
Claire is a Texan living in New York City! She writes fantastical stories, and her daemon is an ocelot but sometimes a unicorn. When presented with the choice to high five or not to high five, she will always choose TO HIGH FIVE. Her first novel,

Well done! How to start the book is a real problem for me, I always end up with several different options that I like and keep wasting too much time trying to pick one.
I totally know what you mean. It’s difficult to start a book. There’s such pressure about the opening — what it should be, what it shouldn’t be, what to do, what not to do, is it a good first line, are you avoiding clichés — so much so that you can think yourself into a corner about it. Hopefully that sort of thing gets better with time? Good luck to you!
Good to hear you’re getting lots of writing done. I love how your brain works.
Aw, thanks sweetie.
Your brain ain’t too shabby, either.
*hugs*
I love when the brain finally decides to solve those nagging story problems.
A quick suggestion. Record those story breaking sessions in your car. They’ll make fantastic bonus material for when Cracked is released.
Haha oh goodness, I’m not sure I’d want anyone hearing those ramblings.
